How to determine your polycarbonate sheet thickness?

At Justpolycarbonate, you have come to the right place for a wide range of polycarbonate sheets. Our range of polycarbonate sheets is extensive and all available in the different thicknesses and can be found on our website. Moreover, we cut each order free of charge. The choice is huge, and we know that so much can be stressful. However, the most frequently asked question we get about polycarbonate sheet is: which sheet thickness do I need? We provide more information about this in this blog.

Sheet thickness depends on the application

For glazing applications, we always recommend maintaining the same thickness as the glass being replaced. This applies to glazing for garden sheds, additional windows and photo frames. By maintaining the same sheet thickness you are assured of a good fit. In addition, you gain the great advantage of the much higher impact resistance of polycarbonate sheet.

Do you want to build or construct something using polycarbonate, for example as a result of an idea on the internet? In this case, you can safely maintain the recommended sheet thickness. If you are not sure about it, choose the sheet thickness 2 millimeter thicker. This gives a great advantage in strength, certainly with sheet thicknesses between 2 and 12 millimeters. Of course, you can always contact us as we have the necessary knowledge and experience to advise you on suitable sheet thickness.

Aquarium or windshield? Polycarbonate solid and no thinner than 6 millimeters!

Do you want to build a windshield or an aquarium? In these applications, the polycarbonate sheet will be subject to heavy loads and it is important to choose an extra thick sheet, purely from the point of view of safety. We strongly recommend that you always opt for solid polycarbonate! For windshields with a sheet width of 3 feet, we recommend a sheet thickness of 8 millimeters or thicker, and for every 20 inches that the sheet is wider, the sheet must be 1 millimeter thicker.

For aquariums, it is important to calculate the required sheet thickness properly. This is also to do with the consequential damage of leakage and the associated damage. Our advice: better safe than sorry and choose extra thick polycarbonate, especially with aquariums with a capacity of more than 32 gallons.

About Our Polycarbonate Sheets

Key Benefits of Exolon® Monolithic Polycarbonate Sheets

Exolon® monolithic sheets offer an exceptional balance of physical and mechanical properties that remain stable across a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels. Designed for durability, clarity, and performance, these sheets are ideal for both residential and commercial glazing applications.

Superior Alternative to Traditional Glazing

Exolon® polycarbonate sheets are a safer, lighter, and more cost-effective replacement for glass. They're nearly unbreakable, easy to cut and install, and reduce the overall weight of your structural framework—resulting in lower transportation, handling, and installation costs. This makes them the smart choice for modern construction and architectural projects.

UV Protection for Long-Term Performance

Unlike standard plastics, Exolon® sheets feature a protective UV-resistant layer that shields against the harmful effects of solar radiation. This added layer prevents yellowing, cracking, and degradation, ensuring long-term clarity and performance even in harsh weather conditions.

Perfect for Arched and Curved Glazing

All Exolon® monolithic sheets can be cold-formed to fit arched or curved glazing profiles. As long as the bend radius exceeds the manufacturer’s minimum recommendation, the mechanical properties of the sheet remain unaffected, ensuring both flexibility and strength.

Built to Last – Guaranteed for 15 Years

Backed by a 15-year performance guarantee, Exolon® polycarbonate sheets offer superior longevity and value. With resistance to impact, weather, and UV radiation, Exolon® stands out as the go-to material for high-performance glazing solutions.
